Caring for Madurai’s Homeless: A Look Back at Oct–Nov 2024

icon 2 months ago

At Care N Lift Foundation (CNLF), we believe that every life deserves dignity, care, and compassion. Since 2019, our mission has been to uplift the vulnerable through education, health, and community programs. Today, as entrusted managers of the Shelter for Urban Homeless at Tirunagar, Madurai, we are proud to share the highlights from our bimonthly report (October–November 2024).

About the Shelter

Located on the Madurai Corporation Campus at Tirunagar, next to the Urban Primary Health Centre, the shelter provides a safe home for homeless elders and orphans. At the time of handover, 37 residents were housed here—most of them senior citizens who require round-the-clock care. With medical support available nearby, we ensure that every resident receives the love and attention they deserve.

Key Highlights

🩺 Free Health Camp

On 10th October 2024, a medical camp was organized with support from:

  • Amritha Amma Ashram

  • Pandian Heart Care Clinic

  • Aravind Eye Hospital

  • Dr. S. Dhanventri Premvel Ayurveda Clinic

22 elderly residents participated in the camp. Health screenings included BP and sugar tests, while doctors offered consultations. Thankfully, most issues were minor seasonal ailments. Transportation and meals were generously sponsored by Amritha Vidhyashram School and the Ashram.

👁️ Cataract Surgeries

Two residents, Mr. Nagarajan and Mr. Veerasubramaniyan, were advised cataract surgeries. Their care and procedures were promptly arranged, with families kept informed at every stage.

Infrastructure & Comfort Upgrades

  • Leakage repairs during the rainy season

  • New safety gate to ensure resident security

  • 25-liter hot water geyser installed in the women’s section (fundraising ongoing for the men’s section)

  • Bedsheet distribution by our youth volunteers for added comfort in colder months

  • Installation of new TV, drainage pit, and turbo air ventilator

Heartfelt Gratitude

We thank Mr. Subburaj (Sanitary Inspector) and his team for their unwavering support during this transition period. We also recognize the Home Manager, Cook, Watchman, and Project Consultant whose dedication has already made a remarkable difference.

Financial Overview (Oct–Nov 2024)

  • Infrastructure & Maintenance: ₹237,139

  • Basic Amenities & Materials: ₹76,131

  • HR Cost: ₹99,773

  • Total: ₹413,043
